Something that I am always paranoid about and has really started to bother me is coming up to a stop sign with people behind me in traffic. As everyone should hopefully know, the law (pretty sure this is everywhere) requires that you come to a complete stop when pulling up to a stop sign. However, if you sat at a busy intersection for a fair amount of time, I bet you would find that about 75% or more of the vehicles passing through would do some sort of “rolling” stop instead of the full legal stop. I see this so much that I really worry that every car behind me expects me to do a rolling stop. Well I always come to a complete stop and every time someone is behind me I worry that they are going to assume I am going to roll through and just ram into the back of me. Since I greatly focus on defensive driving, I am often times left in an internal struggle between doing what is right and stop or driving defensively and not become a victim by just moving out of the way. Maybe I am over thinking this but I am just curious if anyone else feels as neurotic as I do when it comes to stop signs. Same goes for making a right turn on red (when legal). Complete stop is a definite for both scenarios but I have the same internal struggle.

We call that a Philly slide.

Also known as the California stop! I am pretty sure every region has a name for it since it is such a rampant issue.

I (in Massachusetts) call it the “California roll.” Can’t remember who I picked that name up from. I also admittedly do it when I can clearly see there’s no vehicular or pedestrian cross traffic. Though that’s in part because manual.

I’ve always called it a Texas rolling stop or TRS for short

Trust me, people who rear end you will do it whether you follow the law or not. They aren't paying the slightest bit of attention and they are shitty drivers.

I call it normal. Nobody stops at stop signs here.

I remember first hearing it from my driving instructor. He slammed the brake pedal and said “that’s called a Philly slide, and everyone does it, but not if they want to pass their driving exam.”

This is probably the best way to think about it. Maybe I should just remove my rear view mirror, then at least I only have to worry about the idiots in front of me.

Do the full stop. Hope for roundabouts... Resign yourself to the sad fact that many people don’t understand the concept of “Yield” and will come to a full stop at the entrance to a roundabout anyway.

I’ve noticed this too. Sometimes I’ll see the car behind me come to a sudden, jarring stop that they clearly weren’t planning on.
Driving defensively is good practice, but ultimately you have no control over the drivers behind you, and there is little that you can to to avoid getting rear-ended. They’re going to have to learn to drive defensively, too. If they see more drivers like us who are actually willing to stop for a stop sign, perhaps they’ll get the hint and their driving skills will improve.

I feel like it is actually much easier to come to a complete stop with the manual. I almost always just go to neutral when coming up to a stop so allowing the stop, then slight roll back, and shift into first is natural. I never downshift from 2nd to 1st so otherwise I would be trying to lazily start in second.

Roundabouts are the best but also the worst. I love roundabouts with nobody in front of me because then I can assume a racing line and make my way through and yield/go accordingly with no stopping required. But they are also the worst because people become utterly confused and just do not go when they should. I recall one scenario where it was a 2 lane traffic circle where the road I was on had the yield and heavy traffic was coming from the right. The guy in front of me was sitting there stopped for far too long so I eventually pulled into the other lane and shot out into traffic when it was appropriate while the other guy still sat and waited.

I get neurotic in my neighborhood approaching an intersection where the cross street has a stop. I’d say 50% of the time, they slow down a little, don’t check for traffic, and roll right on through.
So, similar to your situation I guess. We rarely have enough traffic for there to be two cars in a row at a stop sign though, so not much chance of getting hit if you were to actually stop for them.

It’s not the coming to the stop bit, it’s the having to get going again from a dead stop.

Don’t struggle. You’re doing it right. When people start modifying their behavior to do what they think might be safer, they just add to the overall confusion.

The trick to not getting in an accident isn’t any one rule or the other, its about being predictable and smooth driving. If you’re going to stop at a right turn, brake smoothly and at the same rate until your car is stopped and then proceed through the turn. No one will ever hit you. However, if you slow down to a crawl and then brake suddenly, people will not expect that.
Also, just roll through. Coming to a complete stop is unnecessary if you can tell the way is clear before you get to the line.

Yes a full stop is best! They will stop too. I worry about the same thing. I fucking hate people who stop at yields unless totally necessary. Feel that go pedal under foot? Just press it harder to make up to traffic speed, that’s also what on ramps are for asshole person merging on the freeway doing 45 mph

I find it hard to notice pedestrians though without coming to a complete stop. This is really only an issue in more urban environments though. Additionally, I know plenty of people who have been pulled over and ticketed for such offense. Plus they WILL pull you over for it on the Navy base I work at, so it just becomes second nature to full stop everywhere.
